CPop Show- CPopportunity

If you haven't already we suggest taking the time to come down to see the Cpopportunity show. There is a lot of work up, something I can't stress enough. Most of the artists are actually not from the area, as Cpop put out a call to all artists via MySpace and got quite a huge response world over. Some of the local artists include Mara Millich, who was one of our Artists of the Month a while back, Emily Pelton and Allison Pasarew.
So go check out the exhibit, there's something there for everyone.

Since we are renovating the free demonstration schedule has been put on hold, I am sorry to say.

March demo - Paper Making will be posponed and a new date will be set sometime in the spring/summer.

April demo - Oil and soft pastels is on as scheduled for Saturday, April 14th at Noon.

We welcome everyone to these events and as always they are free to the public. We also welcome any ideas that artists may have to lead a demontration.

Well, we're almost there. It's been a long time coming and we're just about ready for the final merchandise move (coming in March). Lots of things have been moved around, so if you remember somthing residing in a certain spot, and now it's not there, just ask and we can guide you in it's new direction.

We have started the renovations! As you can see from the pictures below all of the brushes have been moved and are set up just as you come in to the store. Very pretty!

The Acrylics and Oils are also right in front of you as you enter the store, so there's no trying to find them. They'd bite you if they were any closer. Take a look and see.

I hope everyone had a good Valentines Day, maybe you made it out to see the "Show Love" exhibit at the 555 gallery, or maybe you got suckered in to see the Dirty Show, either way we hope you enjoyed it.

Now on to other topics, we are going to be clearancing out quite a bit of product. This means that it will never come in again! So get it while it's here.

First and foremost, we will not have a Feb. Demonstration. We are rennovating the store in Feb. and we just don't think it is fair to the visiting artist to have to deal with all of the mess and stuff.

On to other things...Gary Eleinko will be curating a show called "Detroit Next" at the Detroit Artists Market in March. I hope everyone comes out to see it. Also keep you schedule clear on every third Wednesday of the month---These are DAMs monthly group critiques. You can sign up with DAM to show your work in the critiques. If you don't have any work to show come anyways, these are open to everyone, whether you just want to put your two cents in or need some one elses two cents.

555 Gallery and Studios is having an open call to artists for their "ShowLove" exhibit please visit their website for further information...you can use our links column, they are listed there.

Also get ready for this years graduate shows at Wayne State University. Utrecht Art Supply Detroit employee, Nick Jones, will be showing from January 26th-February 23rd. Opening reception is January 26th from 5-8pm. Come out and show some love for one of your favorite Utrecht Detroiters.

Yes you heard right. We have quite a boat load of canvas, and linen, on clearance! These prices are below cost so they won't last long. These are non-Utrecht Art Supply Canvases, so they aren't of the same quality, but they are still darn good canvases!!!

Sizes range from 5"x7" to 36"x48", and frofiles of 3/4" to 1 1/2". So there is a great variety! Just to give you an idea of the ridiculously low prices a 36x48 3/4 profile canvas is $18.00. Yeah I thought you'd jump at that.

So, come in and get them now, once they are gone, that's it, they are never coming back!

Aside from great art supplies at hard to beat prices, Utrecht Art Supply in Detroit can offer a lot more! Let me give you some examples...

-Artist Oppurtunities Bulletin Board. We have a great big bulletin board chock full of things to do such as gallery openings. Also artist oppurtunites at local and national galleries. You could get your next show from the pamphlets and flyers we provide.

-Monthly Free Demonstrations. Many different mediums are covered from screen printing to matt cutting to colored pencil, with lots of others in between. Again these are all free to the public. Demonstrations are always on a Saturday, from 12-2pm, one Sautrday out of the month. Coming up we will have a matt cutting demo (Feb. will be skipped due to renovations) and in March we will have a Paper Making demontration.

-Trusted Resources. Any question about any art supplies, techniques, or usage can be answered. All of the exployees at Utrecht Detroit are in the art field, many with their BFA's and some working on their MFA's. Come in and pick our brains!

-ArtSmart. For those who have not already heard of this program, here you go: The ArtSmart card will activate sale prices in the store. Think of it like a Kroger or CVS card. When we activate the ArtSmart card for you, you will get mailings (no more than about 6-7 per year) showing you exactly what is on sale, and what the card works for. You will also recieve some really nice extra coupons (again, we will not clog up your mail box) for either 20% off one item or even 30% off one item, and some others too.

So I hope that you really use our store to fullest extent! Come on in and see us.

Yes, you get to learn how to vut your own matts. The marvelous thing about this, is you can save your self a bit of money when you cut the matts for art work yourself instead of having a professional framer do it for you. It's easy to learn, and may take just a little bit of practice, but a great skill to know!

We are liquidating our soft side portfolios. These are the Blue, Black, Red and Grey ones that you see everyone carrying around. Since they are being liquidated, the price for them has dropped down to an astonishing $4.99! So get one of these puppies as soon as possible, because once we are out of them, and the new shippment comes in, they go back up in price to $25.99.

We have our Silver White Brushes on Clearance aswell. These are going for 50% off, so get those soon too.

Windsor Newton Sansodor is also on clearance. It is a odorless mineral spirit, and comes in 1 liter containers. This is on clearance, for $6.15, and is normally priced at $42.99.

Shown here is the 500 ml bottle, which we do not carry anymore, however we definately still have the 1 liter.

Calligraphy, yes calligraphy will be offered in December. On Saturday, December 16th from Noon-2pm. I would definately sign up for this one, especially if you wanted to letter your own holiday cards. Mrs. Vicki Corwin president of the Michigan Association of Calligraphers will lead the demonstration. She will show line strokes, the very basis of calligraphy.

Just a little reminder that the Holidays are coming up pretty quickly. One of the radio stations has already started playing Christmas music 24/7. Our Holiday Sale has started, we have new art kits for kids, really nice writing pens, art kits for adults too.

If you wanted you could even buy an origional peice of art work. Not only do we have prints available in the store through our frame shop, but did you know our Artist of the Month's work is also for sale? This month we are proud to present Mara Millich, and her photography. Come check it out, and remember you can purchase these.

I hope everyone is voting tomorrow. Just another reminder. If you don't like the way things are then vote for someone who will change it. If you do like things the way they are, vote for someone who will keep them that way.

Our Demonstrator left us for bigger and better things, however we still would like to have another book binding demo, so look for it in the future. Due to the cancellation, we will not be having a demonstration this month. In November we will have an Air Brush artist come in so stay tuned for that one.

Our artist will show you how to use the book binding threads and tapes and basically how to make your own book. If you have ever wanted to make an artist book this is a great event for you to see how it can be done. Scrap Bookers, if you don't want to use regular books, and would prefer to make your own, this is for you too.

Coming in October we will be giving away 5"x7" canvas panels with a minimum purchase of $20.00. You get to paint the canvas board and bring it back to us. This canvas board acts as a percentage off coupon for your next purchase. We will collect all of the canvas boards and in December a winner will be selected to recieve a gift certificate for the holidays.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, Dally in the Alley starts today. Please be sure to visit the Dally Gallery. It is run by one of our former associates, Mark Sengbush, and has quite a bit of associate work as well.

Lemberg Gallery has an opening this weekend featuring Brad Brown and Tom Phardel. Something not to be missed.

Last night the Detroit Artist Market had a fantastic show. That DAM Box Show was a fund raiser for the gallery and a tribute to the Willis Gallery. Everyone recieved a small tin box, much like an altoid box, and were given free reign to create whatver they wanted with the box. It was interesting to see that most of the boxes fell into 3 catagories. 1-People put tiny little things inside of the box. 2-They put the box onto something larger. And 3-people destroyed the box, either by smashing it, or running it over. Allison Pasarew torched the heck out of hers, and another artist Gary Kulack actually shot his numerous times with a gun.
Over all I want to say that the fundraiser was a big success, all of the boxes were for sale and were auctioned off.
The mass amounts of people really helped too. I really wish I had pictured to show all of you.

Yep, pretty soon student will be milling around campuses all over the country for back to school. And this is no exception in Midtown Detroit. For this reason I just wanted to say a few words.
Since back to school is coming and there will be a large surge in the pedestrian traffic levels, please take care when driving around here. It is basic common courtesy that the pedestrian has the right of way. You do not have to speed, we will be open, and if by chance you miss us, we will be open the next day, I promise you. There is no need to race around the Wayne State Campus, or near CCS.
So...just be careful, be curteous, and be safe while driving around all of the students.

The 2006 Juried Fine Arts Exhibition at the Crooked Tree Arts Center for 2006 will focus on an exploration of self entitled: Myself: Visions & Versions. Entries into the competition must be either a literal or figurative portrait of the artist. All mediums are eligible except those based on the photographic techniques. Artists are encouraged to examine what makes them who they are and what makes them unique. In other news...

The Detrioit Artist Market held their very first open group critique last night. This was really a great experience. For all those who are looking for some general feedback on completed work, or works in progress this is a great oppurtunity. Approximately 13 people of all backrounds came in, and five artists signed up to display their work.
DAM will be holding this event every month (excluding november and December due to the Holiday show) on the third Wednesday of the month. For more information please contact Sara at DAM.

There are two days left until the Mold Making and Casting Demonstration. We would love to see everyone come out and join us. The artist will be demonstrating how to make molds of faces, and hands. She will also show how to make a one part mold, and a two part mold. Techniques in plaster, plastic, resin, rubber and wax will be talked about.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET DIRTY!!!! But if you would like to get more of a hands on feel while learning, please bring some studio clothes.

We hope that everyone can make it out to see this. Kids are more than welcome. And parents should see this as an opputunity to learn some activities for you and you kids. (great rainy day, stay at home projects!) Our Colored Pencil Demonstration was a big success, so if you missed that one, and deeply regret it, here is a chance to make up for your absence!

Posted are copies of Calls for artists, Artist job openings and lots of other things of the sort. There are about 5 copies of each article/item, so no worries there is plenty to go around. Most of the Calls for Artists have deadline way in the future, so you have time to get everything together that you need. Many are out of state as well, so if you found that you have exhausted all galleries here in Detroit or would rather show out side of Michigan, we can help you. All packets have the necessary information any artist will need to know, such as deadlines, slides or photographs contact information etc.

Modeled for us by Rachel, it has lots opf little storage areas for brushes, pens and pencils. It has a larger storeage area for sketch books and notebooks too.

August Demonstration - Mold Making and Casting!!!!

YES, we are having another demonstration! (as if you really had to ask.) This one will be Mold Making and Casting. This one will be a little more intensive with lots of samples of rubber molds and casts, resin, wax casts, plaster molds and casts. And we'll see if the Artist can make a mold of some ones face (great idea for you and your kids!). That would be cool to see! If you would like to get hands on, please wear old clothing or shirts you really don't care about.
Tutorials will be passed out so that if you forget anything you have a handy guide with you.

New things going on at Utrecht Detroit

We have now a small display of how to silkscreen and how to use the fabric paints as well as Sharpie Markers on fabrics. All of these techniques were used with products you can find in our store.
Sounds like a good afternoon project with the kids, maybe you can even make something special for them for the first day of school. (which is coming up faster then you can imagine.)

And then there is the mass amounts of canvas we have. Some of these are regular priced, others are on sale for some really good deals. Such as the 4x6 and 5x7 Artist Series stretched canvases, only $.99!! That is a serious bargin people, I'd jump all over that oppurtunity. And if you don't know what you'd do with them here are a few suggestions....
-birthday presents, no one can resist a handmade birthday present especially if it a painting expressing you creativity and love for the recipient.
-a tiled wall of paintings, or maybe just part of a wall.

Employee Gallery Shows!!

Allison Pasarew will be part of a group show at Synergy Fine Art Gallery in Berkley, MI. Auto-Motivation will open Friday, July 28th at 6:00pm. The reception will run until 10:30pm.
There will also be a Dream Cruiser's reception Friday, August 18th from 5pm-10pm. Gallery hours are Tues.-Fri. 11-5pm, and Sat.11-4pm.

Nick Jones and John Cynar will be featured at Next Step Studios and Gallery in Ferndale, MI. A Summer Happening will have it's opening reception Satuday, July 29th from 6:00pm until Midnight. Regular gallery hours are Friday and Saturday Noon-5:00pm and by appointment.

Art work chosen will be shown at our store in our brand spankin' new Artist of the Month area (located to the left as soon as you walk through the front doors), as well as on this blog.

Colored Pencil Demonstration

I know I have been plugging this for just about a month now, but it's a great oppurtunity. And as a gentle reminder it is Saturday July 15th (this weekend!!) from 12pm until 2pm. They also have an arts forum is a great way to learn things from other artists. They are very helpful with techniques of any kind. There are also calenders for events, an arts community posting site, as well artist career oriented oppurtunities and creative gigs. So check it out.

The Paint A Tote competition deadline has been extended from July 14th to July 31st.

If you would like you can enter our "Paint A Tote" competition.
If you buy a tote (only $1.99) paint it, collage it, whatever you'd like (within tasteful boundaries), and return it to us along with contact info by July 14th.
We will display them for a month or two, and after that time, we will pick a winning tote, and the artist of that tote will recieve a $20.00 gift card!

On the comments link below for Demonstration posts, please leave your name and phone number for the demonstrations. We will call you two days in advance to remind you of dates and times. Or, if you would prefer, you can come into the store and sign up on our demonstration sign up sheets at the registers.

As we have mentioned before, the next demonstration is a talented Colored Pencil artist, scheduled for July 15th from 12-2pm. Don't miss it.
